Launched in 2001, the .NAME gTLD is the only one intended for personal sites only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to reserve john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level domain names remained functional.
